Applying for your Long Beach NY Contractor License

Long Beach lists separate requirements for General Contractors, Home Improvement and Miscellaneous Contractors, and Demolition & Excavation Contractors, so the first step is identifying which category matches your work. 


In most cases, the City requires a signed and notarized mercantile application, proof of general liability insurance, proof of workers’ compensation coverage or a valid exemption filing, a list of five recent jobs, and business ownership information if the applicant is a corporation or partnership. For many contractor categories, Long Beach also requires a current Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs license, although the City notes that this is not required for commercial-only general contractors and commercial-only demolition/excavation contractors. 


The insurance thresholds vary by category. The City’s page lists $1,000,000 in general liability coverage for General Contractors and for Demolition & Excavation Contractors, while Home Improvement & Miscellaneous Contractors must provide $500,000 in general liability coverage. In each case, the City of Long Beach must be listed as the certificate holder. 


Fees and expiration dates also depend on the license class. The City lists a $530 fee for General Contractors, a $400 fee for Home Improvement Contractors, and separate fee details for Miscellaneous Contractors on the form. Licenses are issued for two years or part thereof, but the expiration month differs by category, so applicants should confirm the correct cycle before filing or renewing.
